Ancient coins come in tens of thousands of types, with hundreds of “issuing authorities” (empires, cities, tribes, and rulers) and the books that document all this information represent centuries of accumulated scholarship — not all of it in English. First published in , Van Meter's Handbook of Roman Imperial Coins (HRIC) quickly became a cult classic among collectors. In , used copies were trading in excess of $ on eBay. This was no surprise, book remains the most comprehensive, and yet easy-to-use one-volume reference on Roman Imperial Coins!   Although I have lurked here for a few months, I have yet to buy an ancient coin. This is mostly because I don't intend to be sucked in to a field without being properly informed (I.E. falling horsemen or camp gates). Thus the need for ancient coin books. Also, I don't want to spend a boatload of money on RIC or sundry expensive tomes.   There are millions of people interested in Bible study materials but somewhere between dozens and hundreds who care about our old hunks of scrap metal. It is no wonder that the average book mentioned here is 50 to years old. It will take at least that long to produce the next generation of ancient coin books.
